I use eternal-september.org with my PC with Windows Live Mail (which is
already set up for Newsgroups). I'm looking for a recommendation for a
similar (and preferably free) newsgroup reader for my new MacBook Pro. (I
warned here I was going to buy one this month, and I did!)

This has been discussed thoroughly in comp.sys.mac.apps:

Hmmm. The popular Thoth is $25, Hogwasher a bit more.

Going to NEAIC and/or NEAF this year? I'll be at NEAIC on Thur-Fri and
at NEAF on Saturday. Leaving Suffern at about 11 AM on Sunday.

Thoth is no more. Thunderbird is a free download from Mozilla (Firefox)
and Pan can be installed from the commandline (MacPorts makes it super
easy).

I use Agent for Windows (Yes!!!!) under Crossover for Mac. It works very
good in that way, and Agent is the best Usenet software you can find.

I couldn't get Agent to connect to the network through Crossover. What
version of Mac OS and Crossover are you using?

Of the Unison offerings I prefer 1.8.1 over 2.2

Thoth was written by a capricious jackass and is not available even if
you were foolish enough to want to buy it. There is, of course, no
support for Thoth (not that there ever was).

Ooops. I meant to say I prefer 2.1.10 of Unison, not Thoth which is
currently at 1.9.1.2.

I'm sure there is an asshole to lambast for that as well...

Sure you do. It's a useless recommendation since you can't buy a
license. Thunderbird is a free functional easy to use option. I use
MT-NW or Pan2 mostly, also free.

I installed Thunderbird, and have no idea what to do next with regard to
creating a newsgroup account through them. I put in eternal-september.org
into a newsreader field, but all I could get are about ten eternal-september
newsgroups. (I suspect there's a setting to put in somewhere, like my
eternal-september username and password, but I couldn't see any place to do
that.)

What is Pan2? I did a search on that, and it's about mouse genomes. I don't
know what MacPorts is (I looked it up, and it appears to be some sort of
"development project.") I need more information how to set all this up to
create a usenet reader.

Have you got the right URL? A typical Usenet looks like:
news.eternal-september.org or nntp.eternal-september.org .

Here's the manual...

Not for you unless you're interested in installing software through the
commandline.

The URL for eternal-september? I did enter news.eternal-september.org, and I
got only the several e-s newsgroups. I did see somewhere also the "nntp"
version, but didn't know what to do with it, or which goes where. I recall
years ago having the same problem on my PC through my ISP's newsgroup
settings, and the fellow in Germany? who runs e-s explained to me what to do
for that in order to get all the available newsgroups. Thanks for the
mozilla manual; I'll peruse that and see if I can figure it all out. Maybe
I'll also need to see if I can find the email from that fellow. Thanks
again.

There's no problem connecting to news.eternal-september.org. I just did.
You do, however probably need to tick "Always request authentication
when connecting to this server" in the "Server Settings" of the account
to access the Usenet. You also need register to get a username and
password. That that you see are their user groups... You could try
subscribing to the .config or .support.

Another free server is news.aioe.org .
