Boot to blue screen -- help on a Saturday?

A friend has an old 2006 15² Macbook Pro with 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.

Today he finds that it boots to blue screen then automatically boots Chrome.
If he quits Chrome he sees no Finder, no menus, only blue screen.

Booted in safe mode (hold shift key), he gets to Finder and all seems normal.

In Disk Utility, Repair Disk returns ³Drive Seems OK² (paraphrase). Repaired
permissions.

Rebooted: blue screen and Chrome.

HD is 120 GB with half that available.

What else can I suggest to him?

He has recent backups so if nothing else can reformat the HD and reinstall.

Thanks.

I've never bothered using Spaces (or whatever it's called these days),
so it's only a complete guess, but maybe that user account is set to
automatically run Chrome in a separate Space by itself ... although I
would have thought the menubar would still exist.

Another remote possibility is that Chrome (still set to automatically
run) has a preference setting to quit everything else.

What do you mean by "boots chrome"? Chrome the OS, Chrome the browser?

Launches Chrome browser. It is the only application running. Even Finder is
not running.

Strangest thing I ever heard of. Like you said, he should reformat and
reinstall OS X.
