Can you install bootcamp on an APFS drive?

I used to have bootcamp running under a previous release of OS X but I
deleted it. Now I need to install it again but my MBP was converted to
APFS when I upgraded to 10.13.2. Now I get an error message when boot
camp assistant tries to partition the drive. It says I need to run
diskutil repair on it. I do that but it doesn't help.

The last time I installed bootcamp I was surprised at how easy it was.
Now I don't know what to do.

A Google search pointed to this discussion which may explain the problem
and provide a solution:

In brief, Boot Camp Assistant and Disk Utility can't repartition a drive
with APFS because previously created APFS snapshots are blocking the
resizing of the partition and its APFS container.

The workaround is to disable Time Machine backups, and possibly need to
manually delete the local snapshots in Terminal.

I had given up on this so I neglected to follow the conversation.

Anyhow, I did track this down and was able to get Boot Camp Assistant to
partition the drive and begin the installation. Unfortunately, that
failed. I removed the partition and started over. Again, the
installation failed. At that point I had already ordered a gaming PC
for Christmas so I said the hell with it!
